Hellenes vs. Thracians) and even one nation to another. When it gets even broader to encompass countries and mythologies, I think it becomes even more murky. I always look at the times ...... if no one was surprised about the lack of women in Tolkien's time I don't think his story was unusual for lack of them. You are right though ..... there aren't many in The Hobbit but I think he makes up for his oversight in The Lord of the Rings! :-) Cleohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13152128642971612433noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1483877654474162845.post-49399477729895491502017-02-10T22:58:42.710+11:002017-02-10T22:58:42.710+11:00I don't think he meant anything by it either C...I don't think he meant anything by it either Cleo. But once I had noticed the lack of females it was hard to un-notice it.

Some mythologies have quite a few key female figures, but I can't think of any Norse ones off the top of my head. Perhaps that's it?Bronahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11110584237325026052noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1483877654474162845.post-41252716018700588692017-02-09T22:09:57.481+11:002017-02-09T22:09:57.481+11:00Thank you Nancy I'm enjoying it too - so much ...Thank you Nancy I'm enjoying it too - so much so that I had to stay up to 1am finishing The Hobbit last night!

And I'm delighted that you've surprised yourself. It's so much fun to read your posts and re-live the adventure!

As for the women thing, my guess it that it was simply that Tolkien was immersed in mythology that did not include many women and his stories are an extension of that experience. I was actually surprised at his positive (and prolific) treatment of women given the genre he was writing out of.

Can't wait for your upcoming posts! :-)Cleohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13152128642971612433noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1483877654474162845.post-25547663608477175742017-02-08T00:14:11.004+11:002017-02-08T00:14:11.004+11:00Bad news: Oh, I'm going slowly.
