I would never have thought about reading a book about talking animals, but now it is firmly on my 'to read' list.www.maureenhelen.comhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02405193548002040654noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1483877654474162845.post-85243780081739406912015-01-28T20:25:44.439+11:002015-01-28T20:25:44.439+11:00No I haven't read Blood Kin, but I'm keen ...No I haven't read Blood Kin, but I'm keen too now.
I haven't heard of anyone yet who hasn't enjoyed Only the Animals - it seems to be appealing to lots of different readers.Bronahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11110584237325026052noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1483877654474162845.post-24321566673658453622015-01-28T08:37:21.794+11:002015-01-28T08:37:21.794+11:00I just loved this book. The animals are so much wiser about life and about humans than the humans are themselves.. I found it clever, funny and touching, and not at all heavy-handed about its message. She;s a terrific writer. Have you read Blood Kin? And in response to ipsofacto above, yes, she absolutely did deserve the prize She's one of the few original new Australian voices.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1483877654474162845.post-83823294300771808212015-01-26T10:10:20.594+11:002015-01-26T10:10:20.594+11:00I hope you enjoy them as much as I did Louise :-)I hope you enjoy them as much as I did Louise :-)Bronahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11110584237325026052noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1483877654474162845.post-50906774116690167722015-01-26T10:09:52.093+11:002015-01-26T10:09:52.093+11:00I confess that I have never heard of the New Austr...I confess that I have never heard of the New Australian Writing Award, Nancy. I will have to research this.

This book is so much more than talking animals. It's intentions could have made it an inaccessible literary homage, but Dovey manages the literary elements with a light touch. The writing AND the idea behind the book makes this a fascinating read from start to finish.Bronahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11110584237325026052noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1483877654474162845.post-42730211313580943332015-01-26T09:22:40.257+11:002015-01-26T09:22:40.257+11:00Do you think Dovey deserverd the New Australian Wr...Do you think Dovey deserverd the New Australian Writing award...or was the 'quirky idea' of writing about talking animals that swayed the judges?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1483877654474162845.post-84586594629739762752015-01-24T23:23:56.492+11:002015-01-24T23:23:56.492+11:00I'm glad you liked it Brona. I was planning on reading one story at a time- it's rare that I can read more than one short story on the go anyway. I can't wait to start.
