However I will never get over the idea of 21 year old Emma marrying late 30s Knightley who held her when she was a baby! I get that it wasn't unusual but still, ick.Karen K.https://www.blogger.com/profile/13483190930383406559noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1483877654474162845.post-1893548060818485222018-09-04T17:36:30.483+10:002018-09-04T17:36:30.483+10:00I love that 1995 Persuasion also, it is the defini...I love that 1995 Persuasion also, it is the definitive version. Most of the recent JA adaptations are not that great, except for the 2009 Emma with Romola Garai. My only quibble is that Jonny Lee Miller is too close in age to Romola. The costumes are especially lovely.

I really disliked the newest Mansfield Park, Billie Piper is woefully miscast. And the newer Persuasion is not great also -- that scene with her running past the Crescent is SO WRONG. The Northanger Abbey of that series of remakes is the best of the bunch.

Of the newer interpretations I adore Clueless, and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed P&P&Zombies. If you don't take it too seriously it's quite fun. Lady Catherine is a badass and Matt Smith is HILARIOUS as Mr. Collins. I love Lost in Austen because it pokes fun at JA fans, but in a loving way. Austenland is also kind of cute, plus, Jennifer Coolidge! Childhood was only just beginning to be recognised and valued as a special/important phase, whereas the idea of being a teenager (as we know it today) didn't exist at all. Girls 'came out' around 15 and were often married not long after. Boys could be sent off to join the navy at 12-14 and expected to fit into the adult world. Lydia was only 15 when she ran off with Wickham - a rebellious teenager perhaps, but with very adult consequences.

Having 25-30 yr old actors playing the JA heroes & heroines could reflect that this is the age we tend to 'do' these adult things now?Bronahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11110584237325026052noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1483877654474162845.post-68147882585407034572018-09-03T22:09:14.230+10:002018-09-03T22:09:14.230+10:00Ohh I didn't know that!
