The Right to be Quiet

I may be absent from this blog for the next week.

I have a very good reason.

In fact, I have a really, really, really good reason for being quiet, even though Daniel Pennac has given me the right to have no reason at all.

The reason is....

  1. Hi Brona - thanks for your question about Virago! The one which popped into my head was Richard Hughes' A High Wind in Jamaica, but that isn't Virago... I asked in the Virago LibraryThing group and they suggested The Orchid House by Phyllis Shand Alfrey, Liana by Martha Gellhorn, or Luminous Isle by Eliot Bliss. Do any of those ring a bell??

    1. Thank you for coming back with this so quickly! I googled the virago covers for these books and sadly none of them matched what I had in my mind. I'm beginning to think that too much time has gone by and perhaps I have merged stories and covers.

I did read a lot of Virago books when I lived in Highgate...just seeing one of the old green covers is enough to send my down a path of nostaglia. Maybe one day I will have the time to revisit some of these books....and Highgate itself :-)

  2. Oh!? Well if THAT is the reason for your silence then we should all be very VERY quiet indeed. Can't wait to hear what you think.

  4. I will look forward to your comments about her new book. Our Thursday night group read Wolf Hall last year. While I did not enjoy it as much as I had her earlier The Giant, O'Brien: A Novel, the group liked it quite a bit and we will probably consider Bring Up the Bodies when it is published in paperback.
