Stories & Shout Outs #5

I've had a successful month finishing off all my half read books thanks to Andi's challenge to read #15in31.

I managed to finish 15 books, although a few of those books were picture books. The reviews for the Aussie books will pop up during November for AusReadingMonth.

I also joined in Blog Ahead during October.

I now have 10 scheduled posts and another nine draft posts for Brona's Books. Another four posts are scheduled for my photo/food blog - Four Seasons.

Lisa at Bookshelf Fantasies recently shared an Ursula LeGuin poem in honour of her 13 yr old son's bar mitzvah.
The poem is so beautiful,
Please take the time to pop over and read it. You won't regret it, I promise.

Any excuse really.
I've been looking for a reason why to buy the gorgeous new illustrated hardback edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Andi @estella's revenge has just given me one.

The chance to reread the Harry Potter books over the Australian summer sounds like a lovely, lovely way to enjoy our long, hot days and nights.

I always associate HP with the summer months as my first binge reading of HP happened during the summer holidays of 2001/2002 after I saw the first movie at the cinema.

It was a hot, hot Sunday afternoon. I lived in a small country town at the time. The only cinema had only one theatrette. On show was this kids movie I'd never heard of called Harry Potter. I didn't care, I was hot and wanted to cool down in the air con.

I was instantly converted. A HP fan born in a couple of short, cool hours.

I left the theatre, walked across the road to the local bookshop and purchased my first Harry Potter book.

The next day I went back to buy the next three books.

A week later, I joined the rest of the world waiting, waiting, waiting for the next HP book to be released.

I will wait until AusReadingMonth is over, but I think that a #potterbinge will be just what I need after reading the Australian classic chunkster, The Fortunes of Richard Mahony.
Thanks Andi :-)

  1. Well done on finishing your 15 books! Picture books totally count of course. And how fabulous to have all those posts lined up ready to go. Sometimes I get a few ahead which is always nice. It does take the pressure off, but then if I only get one blog post out in a week the world barely stops. Now, for a confession. Should I tell you? I've only ever read the first HP book! I know. Way back in 2000 when I first joined an online book group. I always assumed that I'd read the others when my son got to the right age, but he took a fixed dislike to HP without having read any of them or seen the movies (he has a tendency to be prejudiced like that) and so he boycotted them, and I've never read the whole series. I will read more one day, I think 3 of them are in the 1001 list, this summer though will sadly not be the time.

    1. Isn't it funny what the kids will take a fixed dislike to?
I admire your self control - to stop at just one HP is remarkable! I hope you can find time to read them sooner rather than later :-)

  2. I just signed up for the readalong after seeing the banner on your sidebar. I read the books before the movie, but like you I immediately went out and bought the second in the series after I'd finished Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone, I couldn't get enough!

  3. Isn't it funny how you associate books and films with periods in time. For me, Harry Potter is dark nights and cold weather because I saw it at my first drive in.

I have wonderful memories of reading HP as well and then discussing them with my niece and nephews. We waited and waited and waited sooo long for the next book to come out. I'm not sure, though, whether I'll have time for a complete reread. Kid #1 hasn't really gotten into them yet, but I'm biding my time to convert her.
