Top 10 Bookish Resolutions

This week's Broke & Bookish Top 10 Tuesday is your 10 bookish resolutions or goals for 2014.

I need something to get me motivated today, so this is perfect.

So without any further ado....

1. To make a dent in my TBR mountain.

2. Play less fb scrabble so that I have more time to read!

3. Read more biographies

4. Work my way through What Color is Your Parachute? 2013 - it's time to re-think my working life.

5. To open up my 'writing in progress file' to see what my picture book stories look like after a 6 year break!

6. Only read books that I want to; avoid books I feel that I should read, but don't really have any interest in.

7. Reorganise my bookshelves

8. Look into Book Crossing or street libraries as a way of releasing my excess books into the wild.

9. Attend the Sydney Writers Festival in May.

10. Find a way to motivate/excite my youngest stepson (aged 13) to read more (any thoughts?)

  1. I have to make a dent in my TBR mountain, too. It's huge and I am basically giving up...
As for the stepson, I think Percy Jackson would be awesome. I am 24 and love the books so I see no reason why he shouldn't. The series is full of action and really funny, too!
    Happy reading!

    1. Thanks!
I forgot to mention that he doesn't like fantasy. He did enjoy Wonder by RJ Palacio 2 years ago, but the only thing he read with gusto last year was the latest Wimpy Kid book and his iphone!

  2. Haha play less FB Scrabble. I like that one. I've found thinking about playing less FB games seems hard but it's actually pretty easy. Once I decided to stop playing something and it was really easy. Freed up so much time too. As for recommendations for your stepson, I have no idea. I have two brothers. One who reads fantasy, super slowly to my frustration, and the other who reads books by Chris Ryan and likes books about survival like Bear Grylls' books.
Good luck with all your goals!

    1. Thanks for the Bear Grylls suggestion - he likes 'real stuff' so that might work.

  3. I love #6 -- reading just out of obligation is the worst. Like many bloggers, I have a lot of review books -- I really do want to read them all and I will, but I'm trying to make myself a bit less crazy about the dates and not force myself to read a certain one just because of a release date. They will all get done, but I need to remember that if I read them a little out of order, the sky will not fall.

Also love #7 -- since I'm trying to majorly cut back on new book acquisitions, I just re-arranged and shelved the random piles of books that have been sitting around the last few months. Now that everything is organized, I know where everything is and I know just how little room I have left on my shelves! Hoping that will be additional motivation to curb my pesky book-buying impulse and keep my new year's resolutions!

#10 -- my only recommendation is Harry Potter :) That seems the perfect age to start the series. Good luck!

And thanks for stopping by my TTT :)

    1. I work in an Indie book shop as the children's buyer and feel that I should read a lot of what I buy in for the business! Trouble is a lot of it is not to my taste!
Unfortunately we've tried HP & he doesn't see the point of reading a book when he can watch the movie!!
We don't know where or why he has developed these attitudes towards books and reading - he has been read to as a baby, sees all 3 parents reading regularly as well as his older brother, who devours books.

  4. Reorganize my bookshelves, one of my favorite things!!! I'm participating in the TBR reading challenge again this year. It's a great motivation for me to read books I already own.

#6 is a good one, that kind of pressure is a weird one, lol

I'd love to reorganise my bookshelves but sadly I have no more space to reorganise and work with! *needs new shelves--or a new room*

Great list! Best wishes with your resolutions this year =) My TTT

  6. The scrabble made me laugh. I have the What Color is Your Parachute book too... did most of it last year, still not working. LOL I'm having a hard time with the reading only what you want to, requested too many NetGalley books now I must suffer. Have a great week.

  7. Awesome resolutions. I as well want to lessen my tbr pile. I mean over 700 books is too much and then with all these new book releases, yeah it's time I dent it big time!

  8. I really should reorganize my bookshelves too! Although it seems like every time I do, I buy some new books and I can start all over again. That's actually what's keeping me from reorganizing. But I really should because now I have a big TBR pile just laying there xD
I think reading what you're actually interested in is really important. We are all reading because we think it's fun, so we shouldn't oblige ourselves to read books we don't even want to read!
Thanks for stopping by my TTT :)

Great list! I definitely relate to the TBR list and reorganizing, and I'm a big believer in either reselling or donating books that I don't really need anymore, so good luck with #8. As for your stepson, well, I sympathize! I can't understand how my 11-year-old can be so reluctant to read, when that's all he sees me doing! Carl Hiaasen writes some fun books for kids -- we've read Chomp and Hoot, and my son really liked both. I've also resorted to bribery, sad to say, although even a monetary reward based on how much he reads doesn't seem to be as big a motivator as I'd hoped. He does seem open to graphic novels more than other types of books, and really enjoyed the Bone series. Good luck!
