Just Saying...

...that I, for one, am thrilled and delighted that Kazuo Ishiguro has been named this year's Nobel Prize for Literature recipient.

The Nobel Prize in Literature 2017 was awarded to Kazuo Ishiguro "who, in novels of great emotional force, has uncovered the abyss beneath our illusory sense of connection with the world".

I loved and adored The Buried Giant in 2015 and The Remains of the Day is one of my favourite reads from 15 years ago.

Never Let Me Know was one that I felt rather more ambivalent about but I have high hopes for Nocturnes, An Artist of the Floating World and The Unconsoled on my TBR pile.

The Guardian's article about Ishiguro's win is here, Japan Times here and NY Times here.

  1. I really think that I need to read some Ishiguro. I'm pretty sure that I read Never Let Me Go at some stage, but don't really remember it, and have always wondered at the rest.

    1. Despite the disturbing topic, I found Never Let Me Go rather forgettable too.

His books are mostly fairly slim and there are probably some great audio versions available too, that might suit you better.

  2. I have only read The Remains of the Day. What would you suggest for my next Ishiguro novel?

    1. The Buried Giant is my favourite so far, but some people find the Arthurian-style mythical road trip with two elderly, slightly memory-impaired protagonists more daunting and less exciting than I do.

The Nocturnes is probably the next one I will jump into as many people claim that as their favourite Ishiguro.

  3. I'm delighted too. I've read five of the books in your montage and will be reading An Artist of the Floating World later this month as it's my book group's book for October. Remains of the Day is one of my top favourite books. Thanks for the article links.

    1. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on An Artist of the Floating World Margaret as it's one of the Ishiguro's still ahead of me :-)

  4. I've only read The Remains of the Day but I'm also delighted, simply because it's so nice when they pick someone I've actually heard of! ;)
